ingredients

so here’s the thing: i feel strongly about food (see: 15 previous posts regarding food.) in such a way that i try my best to stretch my poor, college student budget to buy real food and avoid foods that, by my standards, are wrong. this tends to offend people and i don’t mean for it to. it’s not about my thinking that i’m better than anyone that eats preservatives or tyson chicken or doesn’t have a burning desire to join a co-op and eat beef that was raised 10 miles away. it’s about what this country once was and what it’s become.

today i watched a movie entitled Ingredients. i watched Food, Inc. a few years and it changed my life. this movie stirred some of those same life-changing feelings. it’s not gory, it’s not about a government conspiracy, and it’s not a sob story about how the FDA has failed us miserably. it’s about food and what it should mean to us. it’s about the fact that we are astoundingly disconnected from the sources that fuel us as humans. it’s about the sense of community that we’ve lost as a result of industrialization. it’s about farming and what it once was and what it can be again. it’s about how our system has exploited us and risked our lives in an effort to turn a quick profit.

at the risk of going off into a fuck-the-government rant, i’ll end there. but i will say this: i am a descendant of farmers (i’m black. get with it.) whenever my family would gather at either grandparents’ home for a holiday the conversation would inevitably go in two directions: food and old times. my grammy’s fondest memories always involve a fresh peach pie or greens she picked herself. i grew up in the northwest, so my fondest memories involve fishing during salmon season and picking blackberries with my brother every summer. i’m petrified that my children won’t have these memories. instead they’ll have memories of mommy cursing under her breath as she walks down the aisles of tom thumb desperately searching for anything that resembles real food and doesn’t contain chemical compounds she was taught in the 9th grade.

watch the movie. eat real food. encourage others to do the same. that is all :)

things that make you go hmm

various things that i may or may not write about at length at some point:

1. the idea that the prototype (andre 3000, 2003) and the finished product exist and are two very distinct people

2. the concept that being in a relationship means being responsible for someone else’s feelings

3. how/why i idealize everyone i meet at first glance

4. Eric Berne’s theory of transactional analysis which essentially boils down to the idea that people (subconsciously) play games with each other in an effort to gain intimacy with a person without being honest/up front with them

5. my long-standing history of passive aggression

6. human beings as an aggregate of their relationships with others

7. why every person i know makes a habit out of pretending not to be asleep/sleepy….nigga go to bed?! get off of the couch. WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO PROVE?!

fe·cund   [fee-kuhnd, -kuhnd, fek-uhnd, -uhnd]
adjective
1. producing or capable of producing offspring, fruit, vegetation, etc., in abundance; prolific; fruitful.
